The Reel Deal: Save The 8 (mm) Before It's Too Late

It's a reel tragedy to think about the countless miles of 8mm video film rapidly deteriorating with time and elemental exposure, which is why we are delighted that our video department has grown leaps and bounds recently.  What magical moments have been caught on films that have yet to be uncovered?  Who knows what secrets could be revealed in the troves of your old film reels?

Perhaps a young Salvador Dali attended your Great Aunt Rosa's 12th Birthday party, or your childhood voyage to Yellowstone reveals hard evidence that the Sasquatch is real, evidence you never noticed as a child. There are countless theoretical reasons to transfer your 8mm film to DVD, but we also happen to offer some very literal reasons as well. For instance, we capture your film frame by frame (many others just project them onto a screen and tape it with a regular camcorder, which, as you would expect, does not look too sharp at all).  DigMyPics also color corrects, cleans and adds chapter titles and menus to your new DVDs (at no extra cost!), so you can ensure that you always know just where to queue up to your favorite scenes. After years of sitting in your basement in a metal tin those reels deserve some love and that is why the cleaning process is so important before capturing your film.

Don't Let Slides Slip on the Digital ICE

If you have taken a gander at our website (of course you have!), you have probably noticed quite a lot of chatter and info surrounding Nikon's Digital ICE feature, available on both the 5000 and 9000 models of their "Super Cool Scan"  (more on that later). It's easy to get side-tracked by gimmicks that distract you from what really matters when it comes to digitally archiving your media properly. By "properly" we mean that our trained photographers and media artists know how to work the 9000 on your slides, as the 5000 scans often end up distorting and eerily erasing portions of the image (see examples below). Letting your memories slide away behind that ICE-y fog isn't something we want to risk.

A Nice clean scan. You can read his hat, his eyes look normal. This image is full of Nikon 5000 Digital ICE issues.  Notice the ICEy eyes, the jagged brim of his hat, the lettering on his hat, and the general lack of crispness.  As you can see, the Nikon 9000 provides a much better scan!

Digital Ice on the 9000: With digital ICE technology, the scratches on the film that are caused from storage and from handling vanish. The dust that adheres to the surface is invisible on the scan. And with all this technology, the scanned image is crisp and detailed. Nothing is lost from the moment in time that the image was captured by the camera to when it is captured by our scanners. Nothing that is, except for the unwanted dust, scratches, and flaws in the film itself.

Digital ICE on the 5000 When scanning slides with the Nikon 5000, the digital ICE will erase parts of the image that it should not. Not only will it take out the dust and scratches, but it will start to take out the writing on the signs, spectacle rims, and eyelashes. It is especially unforgiving of anything metallic like a car or train. And it blurs any high contrast thin black lines, such as cast iron fences or branches on a winter tree. We think that this loss of detail is unacceptable. These details should remain in the image, and that is why we use the Nikon 9000 exclusively for scanning all slides.

Winter WonderScans, Holiday Blizzards and to All A Good Night!

Holiday traditions are like snowflakes, they resemble one another but no two are exactly alike. They can wrap lives and landscapes in a blanket of beauty and joy, inspire us to take time to play, and sometimes they frustrate us a little more than they should. Any which way, they leave a unique mark in our memories.  This season, DigMyPics was excited to be able to give three winners a way to preserve those memories in their own unique way(s), with free DigMyPics scans and an HP DreamScreen (“smart screen” digital media player). Winners of the DigMyPics.com Winter Wonderscans Sweepstakes have been kind enough to share with us their passion for preserving memories . . . .

Cynthia Etheredge in Alabama Says:

I am very excited to win this [DigMyPics Winter WonderScans Sweepstakes}, I have loved photos my whole life, and to be able to have something like this to keep my family photos forever is wonderful.

Alison Almquist from New Mexico Says:

I have recently become very interested in genealogy.  My mother and father have collected several notebooks of information about ancestors on both sides of the family.  In the process of collecting information they have gathered many old photographs of relatives.  Some of the photos were taken when the invention of the camera was ground breaking technology.  I plan to use the HP DreamScreen to not only assist me in identifying relatives but as a display of the family tree.  I am very excited about getting started on my project.  I am thrilled to one of the winners of the DigMyPics’ Winter WonderScans Sweepstakes.

We want to congradulate them again and thank everyone who signed up, happy holidays!

What is The Dig Picture?

Welcome to The Dig Picture. A blog about, well, us!
There are many well established blogs about photography so we thought we'd spend these pages describing the experiences of a dotcom in a global economy. You might not think that such a small company in a niche market could offer much of interest but our business is truly a microcosm of global happenings.  The issues that confront us span the headlines of any major newspaper and vary from commercial real estate to global outsourcing.

It's a tough time for both businesses and consumers.  As consumers, we're bombarded with an avalanche of endless ads, clips, and product claims. Even a simple web search can quickly turn into a harrowing experience that leaves us wondering who and what to believe.  As a business, the race to catch your eye and get you to buy is becoming increasingly competitive. It's our belief that building the best company in the industry cannot be achieved by merely out-shouting the others.  It requires the hard work of delivering on promises and exceeding expectations.

Our hope with this blog is to bring our customers and potential customers a candid look at the practices and people behind these web pages.  For our team of highly trained photographers and videographers, digitizing each one of your photos and videos is an art, and we want to help you bring your art to life. We look forward to sharing techniques, tips of the trade, and creative advice from a vantage point that combines our loads of experience and passionately artistic minds.

Thanks for reading,

Your friends at DigMyPics.
